The Vilna school concept rebuilds the damaged site as a school complex

Design by IK Architects a conceptual reconstruction of the Vilna school, a multi-purpose timber educational institution in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The project is located on the site of Gymnasium No. 47, which was targeted by a missile by Russian occupation forces on July 4, 2022. Beyond its primary function as a safe place for local children to learn, the Vilna School is symbolic of a wider ambition of IK Architects to revitalize and modernize the education system in Ukraine.

The concept of IK architects imagine a safe space for learning

IK Architects was founded in 2012 by Katernya Yarova design company based in Kharkiv, who undertake a wide range of conceptual and realized projects, spanning private residences, commercial premises and offices. The reconstruction of the Vilna School is important for the children of Ukraine, with the aim of minimizing the impact of the ongoing war on their education. IK Architects has created a design that prioritizes flexibility, with the potential for future renovation and expansion given the 8,000 square meter space.

Minimizing the impact of war on education for Ukraine’s youth

The multifunctional space of the Vilna school includes a laboratory, a theater and a gym and multimedia studio where music and art classes are held. Outside, there are sports fields to host soccer matches and a colorful playground. The exterior facade is made of timber, and the forest landscape extends into the buildings, reflecting the architect’s stance to introduce ecological elements into the educational environment. In addition, IK Architects imagined a public entertainment element accompanying the education center with an auditorium to host open lectures.

A plan to be followed throughout Ukraine

The development proposal for the Vilna school serves as a blueprint for the rehabilitation of educational spaces across Ukraine, presenting the possibility of rebuilding damaged or destroyed buildings. By providing a safe and inspiring learning environment for students in Kharkiv, the school aims to encourage the renovation of many similar spaces across the country.
