“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin slammed comedian Bill Maher’s criticism of vigilantism Thursday and said the comedian should be “ashamed.”
Hostin argued that the term “wake” has been “co-opted” by the right and Maher himself.
“He compares the awakening to identity politics. He believes that the awakening means diversity of opinion. That’s not what the awakening meant in the mid-1900s. That’s not what the awakening meant during the civil rights movement. That’s not what the awakening during BLM. It’s not What does awakening mean now. I think he should be ashamed of some of the things he’s said about vigilantism,” Hostin said.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked Hostin why “diversity of opinion” should not be part of the definition of “woke.”
“That’s not what it meant. That was a co-opting of the term. That’s taking the power away from black people who stand up for what we deserve from this country,” Hostin told Farah Griffin.
Farah Griffin asked again why “diversity of thought” would not be included if the aim is to “achieve as much diversity, inclusion and equality as possible”.
“Diversity of thought is not the same as being woke. Woke is not a political term. Woke is a term for racism, social injustice, equality. It doesn’t mean you like Trump or you don’t like him, you don’t like means you’re MAGA or you’re not. It doesn’t mean you’re a Republican or you’re not,” Hostin continued.

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg argued that Republicans needed to “admit” they are “sleeping.”
“That’s the way I look at it. We weren’t sleeping. We always knew what had to happen because we couldn’t sleep,” Goldberg said. “You had to be careful where you went and what you did and how you handled yourself. The same way we always have these things we explain. When we were kids we were told, this is how I deal with the police. There was no time to sleep. So ‘ that’s what I always say they were the ones who just woke up. They’re freaking out because it wasn’t what they expected to see.”
The hosts discussed a clip of Maher saying “woke up” started as a “good thing” and turned into an “eye roll”.
“Democrats can sometimes take it too far. I would categorize ‘liberal’ as different from ‘woke’. Woke, which started as a good thing, a warning about injustice, who could be against that ?But then it became a kind of fascination because they love diversity in addition to ideas. Abraham Lincoln was not a controversial figure among liberals. We liked him Now they are removing his name from schools and tearing down his statues. Really, Lincoln is not good enough for you?” Maher said during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper.

Goldberg criticized Maher in January 2022 for comments he made about COVID-19 and the mask.
“You don’t have to, but stay away from everyone, because if you’re the one who’s not paying attention and you’re coughing and sneezing… then stay away from the public, man,” he told the Times. “Nobody wants that. I don’t. And I think he forgets that there are still people at risk who can’t be vaccinated… young children under five or people with health problems.”
