Key background

Last year’s ceremony was overshadowed when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, who joked with Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, during an award presentation. Will Smith was banned from attending the ceremony for 10 years. However, the incident is likely to be mentioned at this year’s ceremony. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Cramer said the group has implemented a “crisis team” to handle surprises at the event in the future. Usually, Oscar voters ignore blockbusters when it comes to best picture. But this year, three are vying for the top prize: Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way Of Water and Elvis.

What to watch out for

Since Smith can’t attend the awards show, it’s unclear who will present the best actress award. Usually, the previous years’ Best Actor winner presents the award (he won it for King Richard). Halle Berry has been announced as the presenter and some are speculating that she will share the prestigious trophy, as she was the first black woman and the only woman of color to ever win it, for her role in The Dance of the Monsters in 2001. If front-runner Michelle Yeoh wins, it could be a full-circle moment.
