Apple’s AirPods could get more important hearing health features in the next year or two, according to Bloombergby Mark Gurman.

In the latest edition of his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman said he believes Apple will “upgrade AirPods to become a health tool in the next couple of years,” adding “the ability to receive hearing data of some kind.”

Apple has already added several hearing-focused features to AirPods in recent years, such as Live Listen and Conversation Boost, but Gurman noted that such features have not yet been approved by the FDA or designed to serve as an earpiece replacement. hearing loss. Given Apple’s health goals, he expects AirPods to take on these kinds of functions “more formally” in the near future.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously hinted at the company’s intention to add biometric health monitoring capabilities to future AirPods models. Apple’s patents described a headset-based fitness tracking system that incorporates an advanced biometric sensor to detect physiological metrics such as temperature, heart rate, sweat levels and more through skin contact and through built-in motion sensors. Apple’s vice president of technology, Kevin Lynch, also hinted that AirPods could be a source of additional health data in the future.

The new hearing health features won’t necessarily depend on the release of new AirPods, as current models already contain speakers and microphones to support such features, and could be pushed to existing devices via a firmware update.
