‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ dominates the Oscars

The top row

The 95th Academy Awards aired on Sunday, marking the end of the awards season as some of the best actors, industry professionals and films of the year were honored, as indie film Everywhere Everything at the same time triumphed during the ceremony.

Basic elements

Everything Everywhere Simultaneously was the most nominated film, with 11 nods, and took home seven trophies, including Best Picture and Best Actress — more than any other film.

All four acting winners—Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan—won their first Oscars during the ceremony. 16 candidates were first.

Yeoh, the first Asian woman to win Best Actress, received her award from Halle Berry, the first black woman to win the trophy.

Host Jimmy Kimmel inevitably made a few jokes about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during last year’s ceremony, but it wasn’t the main focus of his time on stage.

Key background

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the show — last year, when Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall hosted, it was the first time since 2018 that the show had official hosts. The program featured performances by a number of Best Original Song nominees, including Rihanna (“Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), and Lenny Kravitz will sing during the In Memoriam segment. Last year’s ceremony was overshadowed when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, who joked with Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, during an award presentation. Will Smith was banned from attending the ceremony for 10 years. However, the incident is likely to be mentioned at this year’s ceremony. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Cramer said the group has created a “crisis team” to handle surprises at the future event. Usually, Oscar voters ignore blockbusters when it comes to best picture. But this year, three were up for the top prize: Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way Of Water and Elvis.
